Awwww...Brownie died. I remember going to Sunset Zoo as a kid and seeing Brownie and his grizzly bear family. I was shocked many years later when I started teaching Kindergarten in Abilene, and we took our field trip to the zoo, that Brownie was still alive. We went to the zoo two weeks ago and Brownie was just hanging out in his 'cave'. I'm sure he is enjoying grizzly bear heaven...
Sunset Zoo's Brownie BearFriday, May 22, 2009
After an extraordinarily long life and the cumulative effects of living far longer than bears in the wild, 56-year old Brownie, Sunset Zoo’s senior resident and grizzly bear, was euthanized May 22. Veterinarians and Zookeepers were by his side when he died Friday.
"We had a lot of people involved in managing Brownie's care," said Scott Shoemaker, Sunset Zoo Director. "It became apparent that his quality of life was not improving, and was deteriorating rapidly despite the best efforts of all involved. Brownie’s veterinarian team and Zoo staff determined that the only humane thing to do was to euthanize him."
Brownie came to the Zoo in 1968 while founder, E.J. Frick was still serving as Sunset Zoo Director (1933-1976).

I really thought that bear was going to out last us all! Now, I am REALLY sad that it was so cold on our field trip this year and he wouldn't come out of his cave. He will forever hold a place in my heart and memories. Sunset Zoo just won't be the same.
