Statue of Liberty

We were advised by the concierge (or connoisseur, right Mark?) at the hotel that the fastest way to get to Battery Park was the Subway. We were leery, but took her advice.
Trying not to look like tourists...LOL!!
We asked a very nice security guard a question...he asked us where we were from...we replied "Kansas"...his response..."Oh, I have a friend from Alabama!"...He must not get out much??
We found that the Subway was actually a cheap, easy way to get around New York. This was the first of many subway rides.
Our first glimpse of the 'Green Lady' from Battery Park.
Our ride to Liberty Island was cold and windy, but the view of the statue ahead of you and the New York skyline behind you was breathtaking. Brrr...
We originally thought we were only going to get to walk around Liberty Island, as the Museum and Pedestal Tickets were sold out months in advance. When we walked up to the line to get on the ferry, we were informed that tickets for the Museum and the Pedestal were available (and free, woo-hoo).
Life-sized replica of the Statue's face...It is amazing how 'thin' the copper is. It is less than 2 pennies thick.Mark rockin' the Audio Tour headphones...
This shows the process they went through to build the statue...first a plaster mold, then a wooden form, then they hammered the copper.
The old torch...it was replaced in 1984. They used to let people stand in that...YIKES!!
Our legs were burning by the time we made it to the top...
Awesome...
Looking up...
